Beware, Here Are 4 Content of Dangerous Cream for the Face

A clean and bright face is the dream of many people. One way to get it is to use face cream. But before that, recognize some types of harmful cream content, in order to avoid health risks. The Indonesian Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) prohibits the circulation and use of cosmetics products that are sold without permission in Indonesia. These include dangerous creams that contain mercury, retinoic acid, hydroquinone, and resorcinol. Usually cosmetic products that contain these hazardous ingredients are not registered with BPOM, have a pungent aroma, the color is shiny, if applied to the face the results are uneven, feels sticky, can cause facial skin irritation or red when exposed to sunlight.

Dangerous Ingredients for Cosmetics and their Risks

Here are some dangerous ingredients that are usually found in cosmetics or beauty products for the face:

Mercury

Mercury is able to inhibit the formation of melanin, thus making the skin appear brighter in a short time. That is why mercury is often used as a whitening or skin lightening cream. If used continuously, mercury can cause rashes and skin discoloration, tremors, kidney damage, and psychological disorders, such as anxiety and insomnia. In pregnant women and nursing mothers, exposure to mercury can cause congenital abnormalities and impaired brain development in infants.

Retinoic acid

Retinoic acid can cleanse pores, treat pimples and acne scars, and reduce wrinkles. However, retinoic acid risks causing skin to become irritated, dry, sensitive to sunlight, discolored, swollen, or reddish. Not only that, fetuses in the womb exposed to these substances are at risk of developing congenital abnormalities, while children are at risk of experiencing abnormalities in the nervous system, bones, muscles, joints and digestion. That is why the use of products containing retinoic acid must be under medical supervision and through a doctor's prescription.

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is used to brighten the skin and dark spots. However, the use of hydroquinone in facial creams can make skin sensitive to sunlight. Other side effects include stinging, reddish, dry skin and cracked, blistered, or blackened. Hydroquinone also has the risk of causing severe allergic reactions, such as headaches, rashes, itching, swelling of the face and throat, and difficulty breathing.

Resorcinol

Resorcinol can be used to treat pain and itching caused by insect bites, poisonous plants, burns, sunburn, and skin irritation. Resorcinol is also commonly used as a medicine to treat skin diseases, such as eczema, warts, psoriasis, and calluses. But if used too much, resorcinol can cause headaches, fatigue, bluish skin, irregular heartbeat, convulsions, to shortness of breath. To prevent the effects of these harmful creams, be wise and careful in choosing and using over-the-counter cosmetics. Do not be easily tempted by beauty products that are sold at cheap prices. Make sure the cosmetic product you choose has a marketing authorization from BPOM. It's best to consult with a doctor before using face creams or other beauty products. Your doctor will suggest the type of face cream that is suitable and safe for your skin.
